Finding Inclusivity: A Journey to a Neurodiverse-Friendly Workplace

In today’s blog, I am excited to share a transformative experience I have had in transitioning to a truly inclusive work environment—one that embraces neurodiversity and supports individuals like me, in meaningful ways. My journey into this new role has been a testament to the power of inclusivity and the positive impact it can have on mental health and professional fulfillment.

From the moment I embarked on this new chapter, I could sense a shift in how my needs were perceived and addressed. While it took some time to implement the accommodations I required, I felt genuinely supported throughout the process. What struck me most was the company’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity. This was evident in the extensive discussions during onboarding, such as, talking about what it truly means to create an inclusive workplace.

These discussions not only highlighted the legal obligations associated with inclusivity but also emphasized the importance of mutual respect and understanding between employees and employers. It was a moment of realization for me—an affirmation that I had found a place where my neurodiversity would be valued rather than stigmatized.

One of the most significant accommodations for me was having a quiet environment to use my dictation software effectively. Realizing that working from home could provide this environment was a game-changer. Transitioning to remote work allowed me to focus on my tasks without distractions and utilize the necessary technology to perform my job to the fullest.

While working remotely as a nurse may not be the conventional route, it has proven to be an ideal fit for me. In my role with a large company facilitating medication delivery, I correspond with physicians and patients to ensure their needs are met. This job aligns well with my strengths, yet it still presents challenges due to my neurodiversity.

Spending extended periods on the computer can be mentally draining, and managing multiple tabs can feel overwhelming. However, I’ve learned to give myself the time and space to adjust. Adjusting to a new job and work environment takes patience and understanding, both from oneself and from others.

Giving ourselves grace and acknowledging the learning curve is essential for personal growth and mental well-being. As individuals with neurodiversity, it’s vital to advocate for our needs and seek out environments that foster inclusivity. By doing so, we can create spaces where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

In closing, I want to express gratitude for the journey that has led me to this inclusive workplace. It’s a reminder that with dedication and determination, we can find environments where our unique strengths are celebrated, and our challenges are met with understanding and support.
